Was Liz right to spend so much time watching her family and friends on Earth instead of focusing on her new life in Elsewhere?
Leaving friends and family is horrible, especially when you know you’re never going to see them again, or at least not for a long time. Special people dying and leaving your life is a pain that you don’t know until it happens in your life. In Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, main character Liz shows us that the pain is even worse when you’re the one who is leaving your family. I think that even though it’s hard, Liz should move on with her new life.
Liz, has just died in a car crash and is now in Elsewhere. The only thing she does is watch her family back on earth and try to talk to them. I think that Liz should have moved on from her old life and moved forward in her new one. Liz was feeling left out and was worried that her family would just move on without her. I think that Liz should have focused on her new life and the people in her new life.
Another reason why I think Liz should have moved on faster, is that Liz just ignored all of the people that cared about her in Elsewhere, to watch the people that she cares about on Earth. Betty, Liz’s grandma, has been trying to talk and connect with Liz since the day she came to Elsewhere, but Liz is to distracted and ends up being rude and selfish. Because of this, people in Elsewhere start moving on without Liz and now she feels stuck in between people both on Earth and in Elsewhere who are all moving on without her.
A final reason why I belief Liz should have been more focused on Elsewhere, is that she was missing out on things and experiences in Elsewhere, because she didn’t want to miss out on things on Earth. Liz’s friend Thandi has been trying to call Liz for weeks, but Liz has been so distracted that she doesn’t even think about picking up. After a month of not returning calls Liz goes to see Thandi, but only so she could ask her for help talking to people on Earth. This shows that because Liz was not moving on, she got selfish and pushed all her friends and family away without even noticing.
Sometimes you feel like clinging on to something, just like Liz felt like clinging on to her family on Earth, but even though it’s hard, we must move on so you don’t hurt yourself or others.
” That doesn’t just happen to people in Elsewhere, Liz, even on Earth, it’s difficult to ever go back to the same places or people. You turn away, even for a moment, and when you turn back around, everything’s changed.” Owen Welles page 167
