Number The Stars by Lois Lowry

When I first looked at Number the Stars I had no idea what it was about. I was given two options: I Am Malala and this. I have always been interested in World War II, and this was a great opportunity to learn more about it and read an amazing story.

Number the Stars is a book about 10-year-old Annemarie and her best friend Ellen who live in Copenhagen, Denmark. When Ellen’s Jewish family learns that the Nazis are coming to their apartment building, they have to go into hiding. Annemarie’s family takes Ellen in and pretends she’s Annemarie and Kirsti’s sister. The two best friends think this is the best thing ever. Of course, this is until their lives are at the mercy of four German soldiers. When they move to the seaside of Denmark with Annemarie’s uncle, they have to go through many difficult challenges, one of which is getting Ellen and her family safely to Sweden’s shore.

I loved this book and the real-life challenges the characters have to face.
It is a short novel that I think is good for everybody who is interested in World War II and history. The 17 chapters take you through a life-changing event that the two young but brave girls go through. I enjoyed the writing the author used and l would definitely read the book again. Love Ella

If you liked this book, read some other books by Lois Lowry: Gathering Blue, Son, Messenger, and The Giver.
