We all run towards the scream and screech to a halt as we come around the corner to find Sara laying in the hallway holding a very purple, very swollen hand. I run over to Sara and help her sit up. ” Sara what happened!” i say worry creeping into my voice.
” I… I was bringing you some hot tea and I dropped it on my hand!” tears start streaming down her face and long sobs start coming out.
“Well don’t you worry we will just call the nurse and you will be back in the kitchen in no time!” I say trying to sound brave.
” I can clean it up right now if you need.” Colin says quietly from the corner.
“Are you a doctor?” I ask a little surprised.
“Yes, I am, I took my medical education in London and I am now a full-time doctor in Barcelona.”
“Barcelona! Like Barcelona, Spain?!” I say, surprise blooming through my voice.
“Yes, Barcelona, Spain. I have lived there my whole life,” Colin says, moving closer. “We can talk more about it later, but right now I think we should focus on Sara.” Colin smiles and moves towards me and Sara sitting on the ground. “Sara, do you feel comfortable with me checking out your hand?” Colin asks, kneeling down next to us.
Sara nods shakily and hands Colin her swollen hand. Colin inspects it and then runs and grabs one ice pack, three lemons, one bucket of water and one syringe.
“Um, why the lemons?” I ask, confusion ramming its way into my brain.
“Because lemons help with infection, inflammation, and swelling.” Colin says, squeezing the lemon into the water and then filling the syringe with the cold lemon water. Sara flinches when Colin squeezes the lemon water all over her hand and then hands her the cool ice pack to place on top.
In the end, Colin is sweating and the swelling has gone down a touch. We all help Sara up off the floor and over to her room. The nurse rushes in and shoves us all out of the room, telling us we will see her soon. Everyone shuffles off to clean up the ball and the spilt tea as me and Colin sit down at the door waiting.
“So, tell me more about being a doctor in Spain.” I say turning towards Colin.
“Well, when I was younger I was always interested in medicine and health, and when one of my younger siblings got hurt, I never freaked out, so I took a five-year medical program in a special college and became a doctor.” Colin smiles as he says it and i can tell he loves being a doctor.
” How many siblings do you have?” I ask
“Three. Me, the oldest, Indigo, the second, Mia, the third, and Camila, the youngest.” He smiles and tilts his head to the side. “Do you have any siblings other than Hazel?”
“No, it’s just me and her; Sara was like a sister to us, though,” I say, and tears start to stream down my face. Colin slides closer to me and intertwines our hands together. Just as Colin starts to open his mouth to say something, the door to the bedroom opens, and the nurse steps out. Colin and I jump up, both of us talking at a speed of 60 miles an hour. The nurse puts up her hands to quiet us and then gives us news.
“She is alright and feeling much better than before.” Then she turns to Colin. “She told me what you did, sir, I can’t help but say I am impressed.” She smiles and turns to go but stops herself and turns to me. ” She would also like to see you now miss.” She says to me nodding at the door.
“Thank you.” I say heading towards the door. I step in and see Sara laying in bed her eyes closed. “Sara!” I say running to the bed and wrapping her in a bear hug.
“I’m alright! Your boy sure took care of me.” She smiles but it goes away as soon as it comes. “”There is one thing I have to tell you.” she says letting go of me.
” What?” I ask, worry rushing into my head like ocean waves.
“Well… I have been thinking… well, you know, I have been thinking a lot about this, and I think this incident was a sign; I think I am going to quit my job.”
